Caligraphy

Islamic calligraphy is the most significant art form in Ottoman art. Until 1928, when former Turkish President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk introduced the Latin alphabet, elaborate calligraphy was employed for everything from manuscripts to imperial edicts.

Turkish pottery

The ancient craft of Turkish pottery is honored at art galleries that display decorated ceramic tiles from Iznik and Kutahya. Although many of the best specimens of this traditional art date from the 14th to 18th centuries, decorative ceramics are still made in these locations today.

Turkish Painting

Painting on canvas gained popularity in Turkey in the nineteenth century when acclaimed painter Osman Hamdi Bey founded the Academy of Fine Arts. The Ottoman sultans would send Turkish painters to schools in Italy and France to improve their talents while inviting Western artists to visit Turkey and display their abilities. Some of Turkey's most well-known artists include Halil Pasha, Ahmet Ziya, Hoca Ali Riza, and Seker Ahmet Pasha. Halil Pasha is Turkey's most successful impressionist painter.
